facelessMy recent visit to the YALC convention made sure that I brought home several new books to read. At the top of that list was Faceless by Alyssa Sheinmel, from the cover to the back blurb I could not wait to start this book-and there were a few that were vying for first read!!

Faceless is about a girl named Maisie who had an easy life that just went well; she was a star track runner, she and her best friend had been friends since they were 5 and were planning to go to Berkley, a gorgeous boyfriend-the only thing Maisie thought was wrong in her life was that her parents were always fighting. But then fate had different plans for her, upon returning from a run one morning a storm breaks out and lightening strikes an electrical pole which sets Maisie on fire. When she wakes up she finds out that she has suffered severe burns and part of her face has been destroyed. To sum it up her life, in her opinion, is ruined.

Alyssa Sheinmel takes us on a journey of a high school girls life from the rock bottom step of denial to the final acceptance of her reality. In this book we are taken on a ride and we all feel the ups and downs of Maisie’s life; we are pulled along the tide of hurt and longing and withdrawal. No matter what age you are we all can relate to it, I mean who doesn’t remember what high school was like?! The lows of this book are offset by some witty banter between the characters. It also shows that no matter what, only you can live your life and you are the one that dictates how you live it.

Not normally my style of book, I’m more of the dystopian/fantasy type, I took a punt with this book as it sent out a huge flare of “READ ME”. This heart wrenching story opened my eyes to a world that I knew nothing about and I am so happy to have read this book and will add this to my “favourite books” lists! I can not stress this enough but go and do yourself a huge favour and read this book!! After reading this book I expect great things from its author and look forward to reading more from her.
